Arnon Amir
Efficient Digital Media Workflows using the Linear Tape File System (LTFS)

LTFS makes data tapes self-describing and as easy to use as hard drives, enabling multiple new applications and uses for data tapes. The talk will start with a quick overview of LTFS, and will then present two efficient copy utilities designed to improve performance with LTFS in digital media workflows. Examples will be provided from the broadcast industry, where LTFS addresses important needs of the Digital Workflow Transformation—the industry transition to file-based video production and archive. The contribution of LTFS has been recognized by several important awards, including the 2011 EMMY award for Engineering Excellence.

Dr. Arnon Amir is a Research Staff Member at the IBM Almaden Research Center, California. His research interest includes computer vision, image and video segmentation, video and speech analysis, indexing and search and their applications for large video archives. In 2008, he started and lead the DuraBytes project and was the visionary and co-inventor of LTFS. He earned his B.Sc. in electrical and computer engineering from the Ben-Gurion University, and his M.Sc. and D.Sc. in computer science from the Technion—Israel Institute of Technology.

Dr. Amir has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers in journals and conferences and holds 15 US patents. He was awarded the 1997/98 post-doctoral Rothschild fellowship and several IBM awards for research and innovation. Dr. Amir is a senior member of the IEEE.
