ZFS on SMR Drives: Enabling Shingled Magnetic Recording (SMR) for Enterprises

Shingled Magnetic Recording disk drives have been heralded as the next big thing in increasing storage density (and hence, lower storage costs). Yet this promise remains unfulfilled as SMR drives have been almost exclusively sold as tape replacement consumer archive drives. Ceph fails to meet the integrity and consistency of ZFS, yet even ZFS has challenges on SMR drives. What are the challenges and how can ZFS address them?

Robert Novak is the Director of Systems Architecture for Nexenta Systems, responsible for taking new hardware paradigms and using them to create a new object storage paradigm which has ZFS DNA. Previously, he was the Director for Enterprise Servers with Super Micro Computer, Inc. Prior to Supermicro, he served on the board of directors for GarrettCom, Inc. from 1992-2006. Initially affiliated with the telephony industry at GTE Automatic Electric, he moved to Silicon Valley to work with both Pyramid Technology and MIPS Computer Systems prior to their IPOs. He was a founder of Axil Computers, a division of Hyundai Electronics. At MIPS, Robert chaired the SPEC Steering Committee and shepherded the first release of the SPEC performance benchmarks for CPUs. Robert also worked at Sun Microsystems, Digeo, GarrettCom and Quantum3D. He is the co-author of Software Defined Data Centers for Dummies. Robert has been awarded twenty utility patents and two design patents. He holds a bachelor degree in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
