31st International Conference
on Massive Storage Systems
and Technology (MSST 2015)

Sponsored by Santa Clara University,
School of Engineering

Since the conference was founded by the leading national laboratories, MSST has been a venue for massive-scale storage architects, operators, researchers, and vendors to discuss building and securing the world's largest storage systems for high-performance computing, web-scale systems, and enterprises.

Data Intensive Research—Enabling and Optimising Flexible "Big Data" Workflows

Ian Corner
The BOWEN Research Cloud enabled accelerated research through access to flexible and higher performing technology. Following a model of "incremental improvement", coupled with researcher driven demand, Ian was key in ensuring BOWEN benchmarked an 800-fold increase in storage bandwidth over three years. Active engagement with researchers delivered substantial reductions in runtime-to-science workflows throughout the project. CSIRO's approach to infrastructure was transformed from being "technology focused" to "research-oriented services". Services are now mapped into the researchers' current and evolving workflows.

BOWEN integrates treatment of data management, protection, security, access and performance, tuning problems into "turnkey services". The project commissioned low latency, non-blocking Cloud infrastructure in four major CSIRO locations across Australia in Canberra, Melbourne, Brisbane, and Perth. The BOWEN storage infrastructure supports CSIRO's computational research services including the Pearcey General Purpose and BRAGG Accelerated Clusters. BOWEN continues to evolve to meet the growing challenges of processing and delivery of "big data".

Ian Corner has worked in the IT industry since 1987, with a focus on business-oriented outcomes in telecommunication, financial, engineering, government, and science-related organisations. For the last four and one half years, Ian has worked for the Australian Commonwealth Science and Industrial Research Organisation (CSIRO), most recently as the Design and Implementation Lead, from inception through to completion, for the BOWEN Research Cloud.
